The Downey Police Department received a call about a disturbance in the 7100 block of Stewart and Gray Road around 6:15 p.m. on Saturday, prompting officers to respond to the scene.

Upon arrival, an officer-involved shooting took place during the investigation, resulting in the death of a male subject, according to a police statement. Relatives identified the victim as Alberto Nicolas Arenas, who was known to suffer from mental illness.

Arenas’ parents expressed that their son was not causing harm to anyone and that the incident stemmed from a dispute over fireworks with a neighbor.
