Donald Charles Harwood Obituary, 1 person killed after fiery crash stretch of I-85 as construction nightmare; Coroner described

Donald Charles Harwood Obituary, – The Cherokee County Coroner’s Office has provided further details on a fiery multi-vehicle collision that occurred on Interstate 85.

On the evening of July 10th, at 6:56 p.m., a tractor-trailer traveling north in the construction area on I-85 near mile marker 96 close to Gaffney, South Carolina, struck a guard rail on the right side of the road before crossing over the concrete barrier separating the northbound and southbound lanes, as stated by Cherokee County Coroner Dennis Fowler.

Reports indicate that the tractor-trailer brushed against another tractor-trailer traveling southbound and collided head-on with a 2021 Nissan Rogue Sport. The driver of the SUV was trapped inside and was declared deceased at the scene. Both tractor-trailer drivers sustained injuries, with their current conditions remaining unknown.

The deceased driver of the Nissan Rogue was identified as Donald Charles Harwood, aged 73, from Greenville. SCDOT traffic cameras revealed that all lanes on I-85 were shut down temporarily while fire crews extinguished the vehicle fire in the southbound lanes near Exit 96.

Fowler expressed concerns about the safety of motorists navigating through Cherokee County, emphasizing that while some sections of I-85 have improved with the addition of six lanes, ongoing construction areas still present risks. He referred to this incident as another tragic outcome of a problematic construction situation. The South Carolina Highway Patrol continues to investigate the collision.
