Jimmy L. Ewing Obituary, – The man who was fatally shot by law enforcement officers in The Dalles after intentionally ramming a police car and directing their truck at officers and deputies has been officially identified. The Dalles Police and the Wasco County Sheriff’s Office have confirmed that the man’s name is Jimmy L. Ewing, also known as August J. Law.

On June 18, at 1:41 a.m., deputies from the Wasco County Sheriff’s Office noticed a large tow truck dragging a cable in the Home Depot parking lot on West 6th Street in The Dalles. The driver’s behavior raised suspicions, prompting the deputies to attempt a stop. However, the driver fled the scene, leading both deputies and police officers on a brief pursuit that concluded at the Astro gas station on West 6th Street.

During the incident, the driver made deliberate attempts to collide with law enforcement vehicles, according to the police. After successfully ramming a police car and causing it to be pushed onto an embankment, the officers and deputies opened fire on the driver. Despite repeated commands from law enforcement to cease his actions, the driver persisted in directing the truck at the officers.

As a result of the gunfire, the driver sustained injuries and was provided immediate medical assistance by first responders at the scene. Subsequently, the driver was transported to a hospital where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries.

The decision to use lethal force was made by the officers and deputies on the scene due to concerns for their own safety and the safety of their colleagues. The driver’s actions indicated a clear intent to cause harm and damage to law enforcement vehicles and personnel, leading to the decision to open fire, as explained by The Dalles police chief Tom Worthy in an interview with KGW on Tuesday.

The Dalles Police have identified Officer Jeremy Dutton as the individual who discharged their weapon at Ewing, while the Wasco County Sheriff’s Office has identified two of its deputies, Tyler Williams and Joshua Augustus, as also having fired their weapons. Both agencies have stated that the investigation into the incident is ongoing and that the findings will be submitted to the Wasco County District Attorney’s Office for review and consideration.
