Patricia McKay Obituary – A woman from New Zealand who was visiting Southern California was identified as the victim of a fatal attempted robbery at a shopping mall in Newport Beach on Tuesday. Patricia McKay, aged 68, lost her life when she was hit by the suspects’ getaway car as they fled the scene of the crime at Fashion Island near Santa Rosa Drive and Newport Center Drive.

According to witnesses, two men, one of whom was armed, attempted to rob two individuals outside the mall. The woman was pulled into the street during the robbery and was struck by a car driven by a third suspect. McKay, who was accompanied by her husband, passed away at the scene.

Although one of the men fired a handgun three times during the robbery, no one was injured by the gunfire. Following a failed attempt to stop the white sedan carrying the three suspects, a pursuit ensued. One suspect exited the vehicle in Cypress but was later apprehended. The other two suspects were arrested after abandoning the car in Los Angeles County.

The suspects have been identified as Leroyernest Joseph McCrary, 26, from Compton; Jaden Cunningham, 18, from Lancaster; and Malachi Eddward Darnell, 18, from Los Angeles. Newport Beach Mayor Will O’Neil expressed strong condemnation, stating, “To hell with these guys. They entered our city with the intention of committing a crime, and today a woman lost her life because of it.”
