Gavin Kassab Obituary, Accomplice in Walled Lake hit-and-run that killed 13-year-old pleads ‘no contest’

Gavin Kassab Obituary – A 20-year-old resident of Commerce Township has entered a plea of no contest for his involvement in a hit-and-run incident that resulted in the death of a 13-year-old girl in Walled Lake. On March 22, 2023, another teenager was reportedly attempting to evade the police when they collided with two other vehicles at the intersection of West Maple and Decker roads.

This initial collision triggered a chain reaction, involving three additional cars. According to the Oakland County Prosecutor’s Office, the driver of the Jeep was traveling at a speed of 98 mph and had run multiple red lights leading up to the multi-vehicle crash. A passenger in the jeep, identified as 19-year-old Gavin Kassab, allegedly recorded and live-streamed the police chase on social media prior to the accident.

The crash resulted in serious injuries to Erica Carrothers, who was driving her two daughters, aged 13 and 10, home from skating practice at the time of the incident. The 13-year-old, named Piper Carrothers, was taken to the hospital but unfortunately succumbed to her injuries. The 10-year-old girl was ejected from the vehicle and suffered significant head and neck injuries, as reported by the family.

Three other individuals were also injured in the crash but were discharged from the hospital on the same night. Both the driver and Kassab fled the scene of the accident on foot, abandoning the vehicle. It was revealed that the driver was operating the Jeep without a valid license.

In May 2023, Kassab was charged with one count of first-degree fleeing and eluding police causing death, two counts of second-degree fleeing and eluding police, one count of manslaughter, and reckless driving causing death. The driver, who was 15 years old at the time, faced charges of one count of first-degree fleeing and eluding police causing death, two counts of second-degree fleeing and eluding police, failure to stop at the scene of a personal injury accident, one count of manslaughter, and reckless driving causing death. Due to being a juvenile, authorities have not disclosed many details about his case. On Monday, April 8, Kassab entered a plea of no contest for his involvement in the incident.
