They were attempting to apprehend Yazmyn Stewart, a 23-year-old woman who was wanted in connection with a shooting that occurred on December 2, 2023, on West 8th Street in Wilmington. Upon spotting Stewart, she attempted to flee and collided with several police cars in Wilmington before continuing onto I-95 northbound into Pennsylvania. Both Wilmington Police and Delaware State Police pursued her.

The pursuit continued into Chichester, Pennsylvania, where Stewart crashed her vehicle and then fired shots at the pursuing officers. In response, two Delaware State troopers returned fire. Stewart then exited her car and stole a black SUV. She drove into Chester, Pennsylvania, where she crashed into a home on Kerlin Street. Inside the home were Sabrina Briscoe, her daughter, and another relative. Stewart forcibly entered the residence. Briscoe recounted the incident, stating that they demanded Stewart to leave, but she pleaded for help, claiming she had no weapons. Briscoe insisted that she had to go as there was a baby present.

Stewart proceeded to steal their gun and their maroon car. In response, three Wilmington Police officers, five Delaware state troopers, a Trainer Borough Police officer, and a Chester Police officer opened fire on Stewart, resulting in her death. SkyForce10 captured footage of a SWAT vehicle ramming into the maroon car, which was heavily damaged by bullets. The officers then removed Stewart’s body from the vehicle.
