Nicholas D Barnes Obituary, Motorcyclist killed in crash near Southern Hills Mall
Nicholas D Barnes Obituary – The investigation into the fatal accident that claimed the life of a motorcyclist on Wednesday is still ongoing. The Sioux City police received a report about the incident at approximately 1:25 p.m. that afternoon. The accident occurred on U.S. Highway 20, close to the Southern Hills Mall.
According to the initial findings by the Sioux City Police, the motorcyclist, identified as Nicholas D. Barnes, 44, from Sioux City, was merging onto U.S. 20 westbound from the onramp at South Lakeport Street. It appears that the motorcycle veered off the edge of the pavement at the end of the onramp, causing the rider to lose control.
As a result, both the motorcyclist and the vehicle fell to the ground and slid across the traffic lanes into the median. The rider and the motorcycle became separated. The motorcycle ended up in the eastbound lane, where it was struck by a truck before landing in a roadside ditch and igniting a small fire. According to a news release, Barnes did not suffer any direct impact from another vehicle. However, he sustained critical injuries and was immediately transported to a local hospital. Tragically, he was pronounced dead at the hospital. Due to the crash, both eastbound and westbound traffic near U.S. 20 had to be temporarily closed on Wednesday.
